I spent 30 years being invisible

For the first thirty years of my life, I had a crippling fear of public speaking. I went through school, university and my early career avoiding every single speaking opportunity that came my way. I was made redundant. And then I lost both my grandparents within weeks of each other and was asked to speak at their funeral.

I said no. Not because I didn't want to. Because my fear made the decision before I could think it through. That is still one of the biggest regrets of my life.

That moment was the one that made me decide something had to change. So I did what any determined person does - I went out and made every mistake possible. I bought every book on public speaking, but didn't speak. I attended conferences and compared myself to world-class speakers who made me feel like I would never be good enough. I even hired a vocal coach to change my accent, which just made me sound inauthentic.

From all of it I learned one thing: you cannot read your way to confidence, watch your way to it, or fake it. You have to do the thing you have been avoiding.

So I started. I joined a speakers club. I created video content. I spoke on podcasts, on virtual summits, on stages. And bit by bit, as the reps went in, the confidence arrived. Not before. Because of them.

That is what led me to building the Authority Ladder. A progressive way to go from invisible to in-demand. And now I get to help other coaches and experts do the same - in a fraction of the time it took me to figure it out.
