9 New Habits To Help You Succeed This Year

“People who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed.”

Tony Robbins

Each one of us will have our own unique definition of success, as well as our own unique journey towards success. For me, a journey towards success means each day getting closer to the person you can become.

Here are nine new habits which can help you to succeed this year. Some of these you can begin as soon as today, while it might take a bit longer to get started on the others.

1. Take care of your body

Jim Rohn famously said: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” This is the starting point for success and if you get this right, everything else will fall into place. There are just three simple tips to follow:

  1. Maintain a healthy balanced diet
  2. Get a minimum of 30 minutes exercise per day
  3. Prioritise good quality sleep

These are three small habits to do daily which will have a big impact on your life.

2. Set long-term goals

“If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.” These are some wise words from Les Brown who knows that successful people set long-term goals which result in short-term habits that they need to do every day. You should set goals which are out of your reach and constantly challenge you.

Habit’s shouldn’t be something you decide to do each day, they should be something you embody. There is a difference between: “Working out to get a summer body” and“Working out because that’s who you are.”

Start today by writing down your big long-term goals and take small steps each day towards achieving them.

3. Be extraordinary

Richard Branson said on his website “The world is made up of extraordinary people. Don’t waste your time trying to be normal. I’ve always been a square peg in a round hole, and I like it that way.” He speaks about one of his favourite lines from Doctor Seuss which is ““Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?”.

Playing small, fitting in and being average does not serve the world. You need to take on new opportunities, allow your dreams to become realities and unleash your true potential.

Voice your ideas, don’t be afraid to fail, and certainly don’t be afraid to succeed.

4. Adopt a growth mindset

“The problem human beings face is not that we aim too high and fail, but that we aim too low and succeed.” — Michelangelo.

According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck when we have a growth mindset, we believe that our intelligence, creative abilities, and character are things that we can improve in meaningful ways. We can always learn and get better at what we do.

Successful people know that it isn’t just natural talents or luck that will help you grow and succeed. You need to invest an immense amount of time on a daily basis to develop a growth mindset, acquire new knowledge, learn new skills and change your perception so that it can benefit your lives.

Move towards what is uncomfortable, be more curious and learn something new every day.

5. Be more present

With every growing distractions with technology, it is increasingly becoming more important to remain present, engaged and focused on the task at hand – whether this is a conversation, a business idea, a challenge or even a workout.

No matter what you read on the benefits of multitasking, the reality is that you are wasting time trying to switch from one task to another. You will be a lot more effective and efficient wholeheartedly focusing on whatever it is you are doing.

Remain fully present and committed to the task you are on.

6. Say no more often

Do you ever find yourself constantly under pressure to please everyone? Sometimes we need to say no so that we have more time to say yes.

Successful people know that in order to accomplish their goals, they will have to say no to certain tasks, activities, and demands from their friends, family, and colleagues.

In the short-term, you might sacrifice a bit of instant gratification, but when your goals come to fruition, it will all be worth it.

If it doesn’t help you to meet your goals, it is ok to say no sometimes.

7. Spend time with positive people

“Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution.” Albert Einstein.

People you spend the most time with add up to who you become.

If you spend time with those who refuse to take responsibility for their life, always find excuses and blame others for the situation they are in, your average will go down, and with it your opportunity to succeed.

However, if you spend time with people who are trying to increase their standard of living, and grow personally and professionally, your average will go up, and you will become more successful.

Take a look at around you, and see if you need to make any changes.

8. Be yourself

You can be the juiciest, ripest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be people who hate peaches.

Think of yourself as a market niche. There will be a lot of people who like that niche, and there will be individuals who don’t. And no matter what you do, you won’t be able to make the entire market like you.

This is completely natural, and there’s no need to justify yourself.

The only thing you can do is to remain authentic, improve and provide value every day, and know that the growing number of “haters” means that you are doing remarkable things.

Why fit in when you were born to stand out?

9. Make the most of your time

You only have this one crazy and precious life. That’s why you owe it to yourself to see who you can become, and how far you can go.

However, to do that, you need to ditch meaningless time wasters and stop allowing them to be an escape from your most important goals.

To do that, you should learn how to take control over your focus, attention and make the most out of your 24 hours within a day.

Remember that you will die, so never stop creating your legacy and doing the things that will enrich your life.
